We carry the world on our shoulders. Tight shoulders
are a common problem that is continually exacerbated through modern living habits
and work styles.
When our posture is poor, our upper back hunches, lifting the shoulders toward
the ears, and our chest collapses, narrowing the space between the collarbones.
All of this can lead to the head thrusting forward, which creates compression
and tightening in the neck. Rounded shoulders breed a number of physical conditions,
including chronic headaches, back pain, and breathing difficulties. Most people
suffering from tight shoulders will also experience constriction in the chest
area, which negatively affects the breathing and nervous system.
I invite you to explore both active and passive poses that increase the range of movement of the shoulder joints. The poses will also open the thoracic region and chest to help improve posture and thus benefit the entire upper body. Opening the thoracic region and chest also has a significant effect on the respiratory and nervous systems, and allows participants to literally feel freedom in their body.
