You will be inspired and amazed by the effects of your disciplined efforts. Self-Practice is what yoga is all about. For thousands of years, yoga has been taught from teacher to student on a one- to-one basis taking a student through his or her own development at an appropriate pace. According to Sri Krishnamacharya, every breath during yoga practice that is not infused with focus is a wasted breath. The workshop will have a multi-pronged focus that will gradually move from the body to the mind using breath and sound as a bridge. Through the understanding and practice of asana, pranayama, meditation, affirmation and chanting the participants will be provided practical tools that can help them arrive at and sustain the state of mindfulness over a longer time. Also, reading and chanting of some key Yoga Sutras of Patanjali will be included as a source of inspiration, insight and instruction.

Beginning with asana, the participants will be led through a series of adaptations of yoga asanas with the goal to limber and strengthen the spine and evenly release the flow of prana within the body. The use of breath in asana is a distinctive feature of the Krishnamacharya style, the workshop will focus on methods of regulating the flow of breath in both static and dynamic poses plus introduce the important concepts of desa (location of breath in the body) as well as kala and sankhya (the system of arithmetic) applicable in yogic breathing. Meditation in this tradition is a result of a vitalized, alert body; a sharp enquiring mind and a heart that is open and flowing with feeling or bhavna. An Indian classical dancer himself, Johar freely uses imagery that helps involve the heart. The participants may also be required to personally define their respective focus, perhaps even author their own prayers or affirmations which will then be placed within a grid of mindfulness through guided pranayama.

The use of sound, as in Vedic chanting, is a powerful tool advocated by Krishnamacharya. In this the breath, voice and affirmation are made to coincide and directed unto a state of mindfulness. The practice and teaching at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram is firmly grounded in the teachings of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. The workshop will include chanting of some key sutras and a commentary on how they apply to yoga practice today.

Aug. 14 "Evoking Vishnu": An evening of classical Indian dance (Bharatanatyam) by Navtej Johar will be offered Monday, August 14th, 7-8pm in Cooper Hall (Rm. 103) at the University of South Florida.  Admission is $5 for the public, free to USF students with valid ID.

Navtej Johar is a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and yoga teacher.  He trained in Chennai, New Delhi and New York and has performed with prominent companies all over the world.  Mr. Johar is in Tampa to present a teacher training workshop for the Florida Institute for Integrated Yoga Studies at the TreeHouse.

October 9-13 Mysore Practice with David Keil In this 5 day self - practice workshop, (also known as Mysore Style) students will practice their way through primary series with the guidance and expertise of David. Five days allows for two things, one is the establishment of a connection between teacher and student, the other is the connection the student will establish with their own practice. Because the workshop is limited in size David will have the opportunity to work closely with each student, not just sit back and watch them practice. Hands-on adjustments are the way in which this traditional method of yoga has been taught for over 65 years.

Sessions will be held on the deck overlooking the Hillsborough River M-F (5 classes) Beginning at 7am or 6 pm. Limited to 8 students per session.
$125 Registration First come first served.

David Keil is a dedicated Ashtanga Yoga practitioner who visits Mysore, India every year. He is an authorized student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and a dedicated student and colleague of John Scott a Certified Teacher in England. David is well known for his integration of yoga, anatomy and amazing adjustments and teaches these subjects in the U.S. and abroad. David is returning from his fifth trip to Mysore with his wife Gretchen Suarez and hopes to bring back the energy and spirit of this practice in a traditional intimate format..

Oct. 14-15 AnamayaKosha ~ Yoga Anatomy with David Keil $205 Sept. 27 $180 Registration

Anatomical Ideas 11am-1:30pm – This section lays down the foundation for the information that follows. You will have a completely different view of how the tissues in your body are put together and function together. We’ll cover principles of the muscular system, the fascial system, and how the nervous system ties into the function of our body and its movement in yoga.

Exploring the Leg - 2:30-6pm The ankle, knee, and hip create a kinetic chain and the correct functioning of all joints is necessary. We'll also look at the foot with its arches and their relationship to posture and the asanas. The knee, its function and why there is so much potential for injury here, and finally the hips and how the large tissues surrounding this joint have their effect on the knee and the functioning of the kinetic chain.

Psoas & Spine 9am-12:30pm
The spine is an amazing piece of architecture that connects to the legs via the pelvis. We’ll look at that connection, the pelvis itself, the sacro-iliac joint and how all of these come together in the practice. We’ll also look at where movements actually happen in the spine and where and how things go wrong in this structure. Then we'll dive deep into the core of our body and look at the single most important postural muscle in the body the psoas and how this directly relates to yogic principles and concepts.

Breath and Arms 1:30-4pm- Breathing is a primary act of life and a link to the outside world. It also links everything together in the practice. We'll explore our own breathing mechanism. We also look at our shoulder and arms, which are designed with movement of the hand as the primary goal. We’ll take a look at some of the complex muscular system helping to keep the shoulder together.

David Keil is an Ashtanga practitioner who has traveled around the world teaching this workshop to yoga practitioners and teachers. The simplicity and accessibility of the informationas David presents it brings the anatomy alive in a way you’ve never experienced and allows you to make your own connections to your practice. This is not another boring anatomy lecture, guaranteed!
